Lasik stands for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. It can basically be defined by a type of laser surgery aimed at curing myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. It is actually a preferred surgery technique over others like PRK because of the patient’s rapid recovery after surgery and ophthalmologists often prefer it among others for its security and impressive results. The concept is to modify the shape of the cornea with a laser to correct the imperfections and give a good vision back.
The Invention of LASIK Eye Surgery
It is in 1990 that Lasik has been invented by Ioannis Pallikaris and Lucio Buratto by mixing together two previous vision correction techniques: photorefractive keratectomy and keratomileusis. Following several testes and improvements it is in the United States in 1991 that the first operation was made successful. Since then, more than a million patients have been treated around the world with even better LASIK techniques than in 1991. Lasik operations have proven much less frequency of complication than its two predecessor techniques had.
The Lasik Operation
The Laser vision correction operation is usually not long, lasting generally up to an hour. Basically the concept is to create a flap of cornean tissue and flip it on one side to reveal the Stroma. By using an excimer laser the stroma is remolded in a highly precise manner. The tools used are very precise and have high security standard so the patient can stay calm. After correction of the stroma the flap is repositioned and the eye is let to recovery. The patient is the given antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops to protect against any type of infection that could occur. After only a week the patient can discontinue using the medication and return to his normal activities. Ophthalmologists will also give a pair of funny goggles to protect against bright light that the patient should use when going outside. Having lasik surgery will also help you get rid of you Contact Lenses (lentes de contatos)
The results
The results of the LASIK operation tend to be very interesting. A survey performed on lasik patient has proven that around 92-98% of the patients are satisfied of the results and would recommend it to others. The other 5% seems to be correlated with the patient that experienced complications post-operation.
